Smitty Performance Poly Spandex Charcoal Grey Plate Umpire Pants

These pants seem to be The Standard go to pant currently. My review will be pros and cons to give an honest educated review for all interested buyers; Pros: lightweight, breathable, sharp looking when pressed, belt loops in the ‘right’ spots, true to size (not too large or small). Cons: Do not hang on a plastic hangar well at all, can easily ‘stain’ if left untreated, loops are flimsy not solid, must hang up Immediately after games otherwise ‘wrinkle city’ sets in. I have ordered this model multiple times recently since my old poly-wools are really fading bad. These are their replacement.

The best umpire pants you can wear in any kind of weather. The feel is great and they allow you to move. They look professional too!

I have been using the Smitty Poly Spandex pants now for about 18 months, so three full baseball seasons. My wife hemmed them, and they look great! After 18 months of washes, weathering (from freezing cold, rain, 110+ deg weather) they are still looking very good. Slight color fading after 18 months, but no wear failures, no holes, seam breaks, etc. I have been VERY happy with them. I just purchased another pair to throw into the rotation.

These are my favorite plate pants to wear in warmer weather. Lightweight and durable. I wore a previous pair for several seasons and they still look great.

These are pants you need to look like a pro on the field! They are lightweight, durable and look fantastic. Only drawback is they do fade in the sun so they need to be replaced at least annually (assuming you do 50-100 games per year like I do.)

Very comfortable...my 2nd pair. They will have to be hemmed unless you are 6'10 or taller.

They are not kidding when they say these are some of the best umpire pants Smitty has ever made! They are lightweight but feel and look built to last. The stiff thicker waistband allows my belt and ball bag to sit comfortably at my waist without pulling, and does not bunch up should I tighten my belt. I bought 2 pairs and expect them to hold up for a long while.

I recommend anyone order a size larger than what you think you need as this model pants seem to come in about 2 inches tighter than I was expecting. But kudos to Ump-Attire.com for a flawless returns policy! Even though I returned my first order, once I saw the product I ordered both plate and base pants. Finally, I got to try out my plate pants. Just the right amount of room for the skin guards and very comfortable!

Updating my review post-alterations: Increased my rating from 3.5 stars to 5 stars. These are the best umpire pant material out there, hands down (think golf pants). The color is great; dark gray which lines up nicely and is essentially charcoal gray. They are light and airy and breathe excellently on a hot day. Huge improvement over wool and poly wool. Unaltered, the back rise was way too long, leaving a ton of extra material in my rear making it look very droopy and saggy. While getting the length hemmed, the tailor also shortened the rise and now the pants fit better in the seat. It still baffles me why these associations continue to insist on pleated pants instead of flat front (pleats are dinosaurs, fellas) and it would be nice not to have to spend an extra $30 for alterations, but the pants themselves are definitely 5-star.

Love the comfort and the way they work well in hot or cold weather. They do have a tendency to hold a wrinkle if you dry them in a dryer so I recommend hanging them up by waist and let dry. Usually takes just an hour or two to dry. I ordered a pair last year and two more this year because I do about 250 games a year and they are durable.

I was following Scott when the Smitty Poly-Spandex umpire pants launched and inquired. Finally made the change from the Honig's poly-wool and know that I will never look back. In Hawaii both the temp and humidity can easily reach above 90 on both scales. These pants are so much lighter and breathe so much better. It's nice to walk off the field looking as sharp as when I walked on...not saturated from the belt down to my knees. I will keep my poly-wool pants until they wear out but know I will never buy another pair again. I can definitely say that the Smitty poly-spandex pants have become the only pair of umpire pants I will wear moving forward. If there was anything bad to say about them it would be...What the heck took so long!

The best umpire plate pants I've ever worn! Instead of the traditional wool pants, the poly spandex makes you feel like you can move much easier without sacrificing any style or professionalism.

Now I own three pair of these awesome looking umpire pants, 2 plates and 1 base. I'm behind the dish more often than not. They are comfortable and breathable, especially in very warm conditions. Color does not fade like most and as all brethren can see they are well spoken for by MLB, MiLB, NCAA, and all levels of umpires. Buy a pair you will not regret it!

These umpire pants, along with their base style partners, were a perfect upgrade to my uniform this season. I was very pleased with their comfort, style, how well they held up to a full travel ball season schedule, and how much cooler they were on hot days. Highly recommend them and will be adding another pair or two to my equipment bag this off-season.

These umpire pants fit and look AWESOME. Very comfortable. Only downside is sweat shows up quickly below waist band. Didn't stop me from ordering 2 additional sets of base and plate pants.

These umpire pants are very light weight and extremely comfortable. The charcoal color also looks very sharp on the field. I will likely purchase another set of plate and base pants of this model next season.

Cannot rate these umpire pants high enough!! They are so comfortable and lightweight. They stretch nicely behind the plate and provide plenty of room but not so much where you look sloppy. The material makes for a sharp look and so far show no signs of fading like my prior pair did.

So far so good with these pants (I've only worn them for about three games). I jokingly tell people I'm wearing my pajama bottoms. They are that comfortable. Light weight and breathable. I love how the spandex allows them to stretch. One thing to know...the waistband doesn't expand like the Gerry Davis pants do, so be sure and order the appropriate waist size.

Super nice! All the raves are well-deserved, as these umpire pants look great and feel great. Lighter than my GD polys or my Fech polywools, these have been great during one of the hottest summers I can remember. I wash them in cold, dry them in the dryer, and they come out smooth and ready to wear. As long as they hold up over a couple years or so and don't fade or split at any seams, I'll be totally satisfied. But so far, I really dig them.

Umpire pants fit perfectly and keep me cool. I wish these had the expander waist band only because sometimes the pants get a little lose after doing back-to-back plates and having them fit a little tight at the beginning with the expander waist band would be perfect.

These umpire pants are by far the lightest and coolest material on the market for umpiring in very humid days. However, I hope Smitty can come up with a way to add the expandable waistline to this pant. This pant becomes a 5 Star for me if they can accomplish this.

Professional look and well worth the cost!

Look sharp, "very" comfortable and light. But my Pro9 leg guards are too bulky and don't fit well, so I ordered the lower profile Force3 Ultimate Umpire Shin Guards and look forward to the orders arrival and then wearing them.

Most comfortable pair of umpire pants I have worn so far. I have only called one weekend in them so far, but it was in the upper 90's and they were cooler than the other pants that I have worn over the last several years. Hope they are as durable.

With all the hype around these, an Ump-Attire.com sale price and my need (okay maybe a want) for new pants I decided to buy a pair of base pants along with a pair of plate pants. I do like these umpire pants! They are more of a slim fit than my other base pants and are cooler for sure. I am not as impressed with others because I think they wrinkle easier than my poly-wools but not terribly. I haven't washed them yet but I'm hoping dry-cleaning isn't a requirement. I usually gentle wash and hang dry all my umpire uniforms. These pants will be my go-to tournament pants!

I bought a pair of the poly spandex base pants last year and I love them. It was time to purchase new plate pants so I went with the plate version and they are hands down the best pants I've owned. They are light and comfortable and can't wait to wear them in some warm weather games. These pants need to be your default pants.

These are great umpire pants. They look super sharp and fit well. The best part is their ultra light weight. It gets mega hot down here beginning by the end of March and all the way through October. In high summer its 110F with 95% humidity. These pants are the closest thing to shorts you can get. Hem them long and sew in a military crease in the front. You'll look sharp and be cooler. These pants are well worth the money, but only if you want to look good and stay cool. If you want to look crummy and overheat...well you can be part of the next GEICO commercial...5-Stars!!!

Lightweight, comfortable, and easy to care for.

2nd pair I have bought...Love these umpire pants! I'm in south Florida working games all year long. In the summer they are perfect for those hot humid dog days. Very lightweight, true to size and so far I have seen no fading.

These are still waiting to be laundered and then altered so I don't have much to review but, I cannot keep from commenting that the stitching for the saddle seat is way too noticeable. At one point early in my career I had a pair of the Fechheimer combos with the saddle seat and the stitching was barely noticeable. These seem to otherwise be great pants so I will give them a try in the spring but, I do not like the looks of the backside.

As a woman, it is difficult to find men's slacks that fit well and look professional. These pants fit the bill. The only thing that can make them better is if they came with a permanent crease.

I really cannot add much to all of the previous glowing reviews of these plate pants. I wore them in a summer tournament in mid July - and they were the difference maker. I am (was) a committed Honig's Poly-wool guy, but I have now changed my loyalty.

I was excited to try the new pants. They fit nice and feel great. The main reason I bought them is because I sweat a lot in my plate gear, and my poly-wool pants get soaked. My first night wearing them was a muggy 92 degree day. Unfortunately, these pants did the same thing. Maybe Scott can give some tips or tricks to avoid the embarrassing sweat that drenches the front of umpire pants.

These are the most comfortable pair of umpire pants I've ever owned. They stretch nicely through the seat and over the knees, move with you, and they're so lightweight it feels like you are wearing gym shorts. I might even wear these on the golf course!

If I could rate this product higher, I would. I received my order of these pants recently, and I was even more impressed then what I was after watching Scott Kennedy's product review video. These pants are the REAL deal and I truly believe they become the umpire pant of choice in the foreseeable future. BEST PANTS EVER! Folks, there is no longer any reason to wear wool pants on the athletic field. Wear these pants for one game, and you'll wonder what we were collectively thinking for all these years. The polywools are going on eBAY.

I'm usually a late adopter for new products, but purchased a pair of these pants hoping for the best. They are a wonderfully comfortable pair of umpire pants. While not a problem for my waist line, I do wish they had a little more stretch in the waist (I'm hopeful an expansion waistband is included in future iterations of the product). It's not an uncomfortable fit, but take into account the waist doesn't expand when sizing the pants. So far I've been pleased with them on the field, especially with how they hang around the shin guards. Yet to be seen is how they hold up with heavy use over a couple of seasons, but I'm hopeful!

These pants feel great and have a nice charcoal gray color. They are very light and will be great when it gets hot. Although I would like to see them add something to the waist line to prevent them from sliding down. I would still recommend these umpire plate pants :)

Just got my pants a few days ago. After wearing them for one day, I ordered 2 more pair. These pants are the most comfortable plate pants I have worn to date.

I have been a rabid supporter of the Davis pants for over 10 years. I bought these Smitty umpire plate pants on a whim after talking to Scott in Baltimore at the NCAA meeting. While I haven't worn them on the field yet, I have worn them to meetings and for cage work. My recommendation is.....BUY THESE PANTS! They are the future! They have a great feel to them and they look sharp. I'm hoping they hold up to fading as well as the Davis have for me over the years. If they do then I won't buy anything else.

I have never been much of a SMITTY fan... nothing personal they just never seemed to fit me just right and always seemed a tad low quality. The new Spandex Poly Charcoal Baseball umpire pants bar none are the best looking most comfortable pants I have ever worn. They hang like a pair of $500 dress slacks and move with you. They are NOT expandable which is the biggest plus of all... buy the size you need and get rid of that adjuster tab... no more shirt tails coming out and different pieces of extra material coming out at waist. These are very, very, very nice umpire pants. GREAT JOB ALL AROUND... one last political note...I wish they were made in USA and not Vietnam!!!

Very disappointed that these pants don't have the expander waist. I start out in the Spring a little heavy and need the extra stretch, then get slimmer as the season goes on. Also don't care for the shiny material. They are thin material and probably are cooler in the hot summer, but need to send them back.
