Description

The Cobalt™ Skull Cap or "Skully" is the first hard shell skull cap made just for umpires and designed in collaboration with MLB & MiLB.

Aimed against bat backswings and to add an additional layer of force reduction, the helmet is like a coach's helmet but with enhanced shape, padding and features for baseball and softball umpires.

The shortened bill functions just like an umpire plate/combo (4-stitch) cap. It will fit under all brand or style umpire mask and not just All-Star masks.

FEATURES

  • Shortened bill fits with plenty of space in any umpire mask
  • Tough and durable polycarbonate shell
  • Textured sand matte finish to grip traditional harness (no harness upgrade needed)
  • Augmented padding in key zones along sides, rear, and top for added protection against bats
  • Removable padding system is machine washable
  • Fitted S to XL sizes to fit most head sizes. All-Star took head measurements of 50 MLB umpires to get the sizing right.
  • Bill length is 1 1/2"
  • Weight: 13 ounces

I've used the helmet for a few weeks behind the plate and am still getting accustomed to it. I would advise against washing the pads in the washing machine, even on a gentle cycle. The padding has "balled up" in one of the pads and replacement pads have been sold out on All-Star's website and cannot be purchased anywhere. Helmet would easily have been a 4.5 or 5 stars otherwise.

I'm running out of gear to buy so I thought I'd give the All-Star Cobalt Helmet a try. Have worn it three times so far and can see it being a mainstay in the my starting rotation based on the immediate confidence you get from the added safety, especially when you're staring down a wild flame thrower on the mound. The build quality and exterior finish are top tier. It only took about 5 minutes or so to get my mask dialed-in with the larger head gear and there was no learning curve with taking my mask on and off. It really doesn't feel much different than using a regular cap. The Cobalt Helmet does get dinged a star for not including any extra pads to fine tune the fit. My hat size is like a 7 and 9/16 so I ordered the XL and it was just a smidge loose but I fixed it by slipping a couple pads from a cycling helmet underneath the All-Star pads. If you go to any bicycle shop, they'll usually have a box of extra helmet pads somewhere in the back and will gladly give you a few.

Comfortable and appreciate the added protection. I ordered the L based on my hat size and it's a snug fit.

Questions About This Product

Q: Looking for a helmet that has good airflow. Deal w MS, & heat can be an issue for me. Umpiring keeps me active & involved, but took a foul ball hard last night, goose egg in front & back of head as knocked me straight back, head hitting the ground hard on a screenings (aka concrete) diamond. Thanks.

A:

Both this All-Star Cobalt and the EvoShield caps have similar sized vents. If you are interested in full hockey-style umpire masks, these 3 in order have the most airflow. The All-Star System 7 Umpire Helmet first, followed by the Wilson MLB Pro Stock Titanium Umpire Helmet, then the Mizuno Silver Samurai G4 Umpire Helmet.
