Great umpire mask, even for a first time umpire. Makes the wife happy too that my head is protected.

Great helmet. Will never use anything else. Sustained concussion with the old style umpire mask and switched to the hockey style helmet. Had a Wilson that got banged up; the cage dented from foul ball impact & smashed; then I heard it had problems in MLB use. Switched to this model this year and I'll never go back. The design deflects the ball and spreads the impact very well. I wear a four-stitch cap underneath and it works fine, although I have to use two hands to remove the helmet without losing the cap. Only downside is it doesn't work with sunglasses. Unlike other brands, the manufacturer sell all the replacement parts.

I have a large noggin, and the All-Star Umpire Helmet fit much better than the Wilson and much more comfortable. I've worn this now for many games and taken a few shots to the grill. The balls do seem to deflect very well.
Questions About This Product
Q: | I wear a 6 7/8" cap. From the description, this is going to be too large. That said, Richardson umpire caps tend to run small, forcing me to buy a 7 when they are the manufacturer. Does that mean this helmet may fit me? I must wear sunglasses based on where and when I work. Would the Wilson fit my smaller head better? All the negative reviews on Wilson seem to be from people with larger heads. – John McFarland |
A: | This helmet may fit you fine. The unchanged sizing we consider when looking at this helmet is the forehead area. Is there adequate space in the forehead section for a comfortable fit? Generally, umpires with a 7 - 7 1/2 inch cap fill this space without issue. The backside padding can be adjusted for fit with nylon webbing straps. The Wilson MLB Pro Stock Titanium Umpire Helmet has been reviewed consistently as tight at the temple, while the Wilson MLB Pro Stock Steel Umpire Helmet is less tight at the temple but tighter than the All-Star helmets. – Brandon LawsonSupport Specialist, Pro Umpire School Graduate and Umpire, Football Official & Basketball Referee |
