Regular-Matte vs. Sand-Matte: What’s Changed in the All-Star Cobalt Umpire Skull Cap?

Dec 17th, 2025

All-Star has updated the exterior surface of its innovative Cobalt Umpire Skull Cap. The original sand-matte, textured surface was designed to provide optimal grip to traditional nylon umpire mask harnesses. The new version has a smooth, sleeker finish that works best with trending neoprene mask harnesses.

SAME PROTECTION, PADDING & SIZING

Despite the update in surface finish, every thing else stayed the same. All-Star's trusted head protection when working the plate maintains its same layers of padding, lightweight polycarbonate shell and sizing that it had in its first version.

NEW FINISH BENEFITS

The updated smooth, regular-matte finish is easier to clean, and it does not scuff as easily. This results in a skull cap that is easier to maintain and to retain its professional look throughout the season.

IF YOU HAVE THE SAND MATTE SKULL CAP

For those of you who use the sand matte version, there is no need to upgrade unless you prefer the look of the new finish or just need a replacement. Traditional umpire mask harnesses and neoprene harnesses will continue to work well with your version.

best Harness for Skull Caps

The All-Star Delta Flex Umpire Mask Replacement Harness was designed specifically for this skull cap. The tacky interior side of the neoprene base grips with ease and holds its position.

In review

Both versions of the Cobalt Skull Cap deliver trusted All-Star protection. The update reflects modern gear preferences with the same safety aspects, a clean look, and functional mask harness pairing.
