The west vest is a vast improvement for me. It has a smooth and comfortable feel with great padding. The shell is sturdy. I am able to move around the plate very easily and get out from behind the plate efficiently when doing a one man game. I highly recommend the West Vest. It is a great umpire chest protector for any level.

Best umpire chest protector I've owned. I do wish, however, that it would come with the updated Wilson harness.

As far as protection is concerned, it may be the best option. I've taken several shots that didn't affect me at all. It is just bulky, moves a lot (especially when running), and does not ventilate very well. I recently ordered a different brand to try out.
