I use this lanyard for football and it hangs down out of the way. I think it is the perfect length for football.

Very easy to use, comfortable. I had always used the small lanyard that hooks to the eyelet, but like that this allows more freedom of movement.

I had pictured the lanyard as having a magnetic attachment in the back, but in fact it's just two pieces of plastic that fit snugly. It'll work fine, but you wouldn't want to put it on/take it off by the breakaway piece as it would quickly lose its ability to hold.
